Modular Design and Typhoon Resistance of Staff Accommodations in Fiji: A Complete Case Study

In January 2026, K-Home received an inquiry from a cruise company in Fiji. The client was in urgent need of prefabricated container units to build on-site accommodation for their staff.

Project Requirements

The client opted for detachable modular containers to serve as staff dormitories, public restrooms and food storage rooms. This type of container was chosen for two key practical advantages: fast on-site assembly and easy bulk transportation on Fiji’s island terrain, which perfectly suited the local construction and logistics conditions.

Challenges 1. Ventilation and Mosquito Prevention for Hot and Humid Climate

Fiji features a hot and humid summer climate. Conventional exhaust fans alone failed to deliver sufficient indoor ventilation. After in-depth discussion with the client, we adopted customized windows to optimize air circulation.

Different from standard glass windows, these tailored window frames are fitted only with screen meshes. The simple yet practical design ensures maximum ventilation while effectively blocking mosquitoes and other insects, greatly improving indoor living comfort.

Challenges 2. Wind Resistance Design for Typhoon-prone Areas

Fiji is frequently hit by typhoons, which pose a major threat to the stability of temporary containers. Boasting rich experience in delivering prefabricated houses for typhoon-affected regions, including the Philippines and the Caribbean, K-Home proposed a reliable dual wind-resistant solution of embedded parts + wind-resistant cables after repeated communication with the client.

How to do it: During the foundation construction phase, fixed embedded parts were pre-buried in advance. When installing the container units, the bottom beams of the containers were firmly welded to these embedded parts. After the overall installation was completed, wind-resistant cables were fastened to the ground through the lifting holes on the top of the four corner columns of each container, forming a stable wind-resistant structure to prevent the houses from being blown over by strong typhoons.

Challenges 3. Door Canopy Installation for Rainwater Prevention

To stop rainwater from seeping indoors during rainy days, we installed custom canopies above all entry doors. This simple modification effectively avoids indoor water leakage and keeps the interior space dry at all times.

Knowing that the Chinese Spring Festival would fall in February, the client stressed that all project confirmation and production delivery must be completed before the holiday to avoid delaying their staff accommodation arrangement. Our team responded efficiently, finalizing all project details with the client within 15 days, and the client placed the official order at the end of January.

Upon receiving the deposit, our factory launched urgent production arrangements. We successfully finished manufacturing and delivered all products before the Spring Festival break.
